5 Keys To Hosting An Elite In-Person Fantasy Football Draft

Jake Trowbridge produced five keys to a successful in-person draft, putting major emphasis on all leaguemates being in person.

I know that in this supposed “golden age of technology,” folks don’t draft in the same physical space as often as they used to. More and more fantasy football drafts are held virtually with a thick layer of detachment and wi-fi separating everyone.

But let’s face it: That kinda sucks.

Fantasy football drafts are made to be face-to-face, with everyone in the same room, slapping each other on the back and smelling whatever the hell that smell is coming off of Mike. Is it gas? Halitosis? A cologne from the clearance rack that’s 30% rotten broccoli? You’ll never know! But you’ll talk about it for years afterward.

So if you’re planning to host an in-person draft – and I hope that you do – here are a few tips to take your draft day from swell to spectacular.

Live Drafting for Fantasy Football: 5 Keys to A Great Experience

1. Full league participation!

If you’re going to do an in-person draft … DO AN IN-PERSON DRAFT. None of this half-in/half-out hybrid stuff. Every year my home league has between a 40-60% attendance rate and every year I die a little more inside. (Although those two things might be unrelated.)

If you don’t have the full gang together, it just doesn’t quite feel right. Like eating chicken and eggs in the same meal. It’s just a little … off.

I understand that people lead busy lives, but we’re talking about a few hours out of ONE day of the year. Plus, if you host the draft on the same day or weekend every year—which I highly recommend—then there’s really no excuse.

Anyone who doesn’t show up should be penalized by losing a draft pick. Or at least be widely shamed about it for the rest of their miserable season.

2. Use a big draft board!

Technology is wonderful (sometimes) but let’s be real: Clicking the little button next to a player’s name will never hold a candle to slapping a sticker with their name on it up on a giant draft board.

You want your leaguemates to HEAR your confidence with each pick. You want them to squirm as you leaf through the pages of stickers. And most of all, you want to be able to look them in the eyes as you steal their favorite player and take a part of their soul in the process.

Frankly, you want someone to try to rip the board in half because you’ve angered them with your excellent drafting prowess. You just don’t get that with an app.

3. Keep snacks simple and accessible!

I’m not here to tell you what to eat. If you want to eat like a 10-year-old that’s been left home alone with full access to your parents’ bank account then go for it. Pizza, hot dogs, chicken wings, french fries, a giant mountain of candy … whatever. You do you.

But the food shouldn’t steal the focus and you never want it to disrupt the actual drafting process. If you want to serve soft-shell crab and tapas, be my guest Mr. or Mrs. Rockefeller, but you should probably do so AFTER your draft has concluded.

For everyone else, keep the snacks in an area that’s out of the way but still easy to get to. Oh, and just a sidenote, but no one ever complains if there’s hot buffalo chicken dip hanging out in a crockpot. Just saying.

4. Encourage trash talk!

Banter and smack talk are essential to any live draft. This usually takes care of itself, but there are additional ways to encourage some good-natured taunting.

First of all, yes, we should be making fun of last year’s loser. I’m sorry, but that is a foundational stone in any longstanding league. Might I suggest that before everyone else makes their first pick, they say one Comedy Central Roast style joke about the loser? (“I’ve heard some of you call Dave a loser because he came in last place. But I think that’s wrong. Dave was a loser long before that.” Etc.)

Or maybe whenever said loser is on the clock, you play a song like Beck’s “Loser” or The Murmurs’ “You Suck” or CeeLo Green’s “F–k You” and have everyone sing along until the pick is made?

Too mean? Not mean enough? Well, figure out the appropriate level for your group and go with it.

5. Keep it moving!

Last, but certainly not least. We all love to draft. But almost no one likes waiting an eternity between draft picks.

And I’m not saying that you need to speed through the entire event with lightning speed. This is supposed to be loose and fun. But no one should take 15 minutes to make a selection. This isn’t the NFL Draft.

I know you want to identify the perfect player from every round that won’t hurt or disappoint you, but dammit, Sophie, we don’t have all day! We’ve all eaten too much buffalo chicken dip and there’s only one bathroom! Let’s keep it moving.

A two-minute timer is perfectly reasonable. If you want to schedule breaks every few rounds to play some party games or something, that’s great! But no round should last the duration of a Lord of the Rings movie.
